Yes it hurts. But that's horses for you. Horses have a mind of their own and even the best trained horse can feel his oats and buck. If you're going to be involved with horses- then be prepared to fall at least once. Everyone does eventually and I've learned to expect it as a trainer. And for those who haven't yet- their time is coming.
The best thing you can do is remain relaxed- if your tense all the time and afraid it'll likely hurt more than if you let your body flow.

I have fallen off exactly 23 times in 6 years of riding. I'm small so I ride the small bratty ponies. Once, I was riding this crazy pony who doesn't really stop and that charges at jumps. We were doing a line of 4 jumps and the striding was still set for horses. She got awkward striding into the first fence which messed evertyhing else up. Then she decided to bolt through the next fences by the time we were at the last fence I had lost both of my stirrups. She ducked out at the last fence and I fell and smacked my calf against the standard. I got back on and I did the line again. My calf was all bruised and swollen and I now have a lump under my skin from where it was hit. It still hurts! What's amazing is that I've never hurt myself falling off and everytime I got right back on. Wow, this fall is nothing compared to some of yours!!! :P

Some riding schools teach you to "Fall off" so when it happens you know what to do.. Like another person said.. Its not the falling that hurts its the landing!

Also you can fall off a horse if the horse takes off with you on it! That is when you have to "Jump" off.

a tip to remember: If the horse starts bucking if you look at the ground thats where you will go. If you look at the horses ears. You'll stay on. Learned this trick riding my own horse.

Of course it 'hurts' ... but so what? You get to be outside and with the animals you 'love' and you are getting lots of 'good exercise' ... and if you 'fall off' or get 'bucked off' you should just get up and get right back onto the horse ... that's an 'old school saying' that really 'works' because if you are hurting and you don't get right back on you may never get on again. I'm too old and too 'crippled' by arthritis to ride a horse any longer, and I really MISS that experience ... so you need to go out and get a horse (rent one if you don't have one of your own) and take 'riding lessons' ... they will help you 'control' that wonderful beast under you, and also should help you get over your 'fear' of 'being hurt' by them. GOOD LUCK!

Yes. Severity of "hurt" depends on several things. Like, was the horse walking, trotting, or running when you fell? I lost my reins, my horse ran, jumped and I fell flat on my back. Hurt like the dickens. I composed myself though and got back on after about 1/2 hour. However, must say that I was quite uncomfortable for a few days. If you're that afraid, just make sure you ride the first time on an older (15-20 years old) mare. You should be fine. Remember, if you lose your reins, grab the horse's mane NOT the saddle.

I have never fell off, been a horse owner 30 plus years. I did get bucked off once, but i was being stupid...I landed on my head, why I'm not paralyzed i dont know...It hurt, i had a headache for days...
Also a horse can sense your afraid, just relax and enjoy the ride....

Having personally fallen and been thrown from several horses, it all depends on the landing and the speed at which you are flying through the air! If you land on fattier parts it doesn't seem to hurt as much and its obvious the faster you fly the harder you hit the ground! But you can't let that stop you, if you fall off the horse you've gotta get back on.

I 'll never forget the first time I fell off a horse. My dad bought me a quater horse and the first time I got on him, he ran out from underneath me and I landed on my feet! Funniest thing you ever saw! Another time, I was on one of my brothers horses and all of a sudden the horse shook and jiggled me right off and I fell on my butt. It didn't hurt though because it happened so fast. To answer your question though, it depends on if the horse is running or not and also how you land when you do fall. Do give it a try though, there is nothing like the feeling of riding such a beautiful animal.

Well, it depends on how you fall, where you fall, what speed you fall at, and how tall the horses' back is--maybe 4 1/2 to 5 feet (or more) off the ground. Wear a protective helmet!

that can depend. I have falling off a horse when it wasn't moving and it didn't hurt at all. I have also falling when cantering and it wasn't too bad. The time it hurt the most was when I was thrown into a metal gate. I was bruised really badly and couldn't ride again for at least a week. Just remember any time you do get thrown or fall to get right back on.
