Been watching the BBC miniseries of Bleak House. I missed an episode.
What sickness or disease did Esther have to mark her face up?

Esther took in the little street urchin and it turned out he had smallpox. She contracted it herself and the little boy died. It was very sad. She became very ill but would not let her friend nurse her. Happily she survived. I saw bleak house last year so I am a little fuzzy on the details. Maybe someone else can give you a more complete answer.
