For me it's because 'downtown' usually refers to the place where all the great little shops and restaurants are, the best bars in town, etc. It's true for the city I live in anyway.

I was born in one of the largest metropolitan areas in the Northeastern United States. Now, I live in the largest metropolitan area in the Southern United States. Just getting NEAR downtown makes me antsy and ill. I'm just not a traffic, tall buildings and one way streets kinda girl. (Lovin' my house in the woods 20 minutes from the city)

I think it's the excitement that it brings. I live in a very small town and I can see downtown from my backyard and that's where the parades take place and all the fun stuff.

I don't know. I actually try to stay away from the downtown area. I don't like it there at all.

It's usually the where the cultural hub is of the city (ie Museums, etc). That's like that ONLY reason why I go downtown.
