Hands down the cello, with the lower notes it can get depressing, but you can also play as high as a violin if you want. It gives a wide range of sounds and emotions

I would have to say oboe, piano, or classical guitar. It of course depends on the genre of music and the piece that is being played, but when it comes to classical music (I'm kind of assuming this is what you're talking about) those probably touch people's hearts the most. Even a couple rock/pop anthems on guitar and piano are really pretty sounding.

I would argue that the violins have the leg-up (if they had legs lol) because the multiple combination of chords can produce some of the most emotional sounds that I have ever heard.

For my money, it would be the Pan Flute (yes - the thing played by Zamfir!) If you are not already depressed, the haunting but sweet sound will drive you over the edge.

I think I would say violins... in the right hands they can be made to sound like they're weeping!

Violins can make really sad sounds. They can also sound really happy though.

It has to be the clarinet. Please listen to Mozart's Clarinet Concerto (all the movements) and you will know what I mean. It brings tears to my eyes.....
