How many times have you heard someone talk about SS benefits and it not being around when we reach our "Golden Years"? Iv'e come up with a few thoughts towards our future and that of our SS benefits. Say you are not married, no family, or anything of that nature, and you pass on prior to your benefits being able to be used. Where does that money go? With that thought in mind, why doesn't our Government allows us an option to take care of our own future with our money. One idea was, what would be the big deal if we were able to take a portion of our Social Security each year and invest it on our own. We all get a statement of what our benefits will be when we are ready to retire, seeing how it is our money, we should be able to fill out a form and say, Id like to take "X" amount of % from my SS . You might be lessing your benefits from SS, but at least you have a chance to see your SS money closer to you and its security. Just a thought.

I'm all for it. As it stands now, I might as well be stashing that money under someone else's mattress. It earns no interest and likely won't be available for me when I am retirement age. If you're going to take my money by force and claim it's for my own good, at least let me have some say in how it is managed.

Why does 'social security' even exist anymore. It was a plan created after the Great Depression, during the New Deal. It is a forced savings plan. If we truly had economic freedom, we could 'opt out' and get the money up front to invest on our own, or freely spend. yet, then individual responsibility would have to be the watch word. Too many people are too poorly disciplined when it comes to long term economics. Sad, as it hurts those of us who are.

What about the folks that Invest their money in a bar drinking alcohol and don't have enough at retirement time to pay the rent. Are the thoughtful folks like you going to put them up for night or next twenty years? JUST A THOUGHT!

Great idea, except the government needs your dollars NOW - all of them - to pay the people receiving benefits now.

It's a glorified Ponzi scheme.
