What housing options are available for single mums? I know a girl who has just given birth and she hasn't tried to get housing while she was preg and now her family are giving her grief and she's had to stay with other members of her family with her baby, now they said she can only stay for a few weeks. Will the council give her a house? She lives in Kent but wants to live in London.... Anyone know if she can get a house?

its not as easy as everyone thinks to get a house from the council or a housing association. she will have to be on a local authority list for 6 months before she is even considered. if she goes to her local council offices they should be able to help her get temporary accommodation like bed and breakfast or hostel.

People are right it is not easy but it can be done. She needs to go to her local council and explain that she has been made homeless & she is on the point of being evicted from where she is staying now. She won't move ino a house straight away. It is most likely that she will be placed in either a b&b or a mother & baby hostel until a flat becomes available. How long this will take varies from council to council but it could be anything up to a year. Sorry to tell you this but your friend can almost forget about living in London as the social housing situation is almost nil. Hope this helps her. Good Luck xx

Hi,
Not sure about London/Kent but where I am if she's under 25 then she wont get a house, at best she would get a 1 bed flat, although more than likely just a tiny bedsit.

She would need to apply with the local housing, new rules have taken effect and people are misguided they can just have a kid and get a house. Im afraid if she's desperate they will just give her a communical room in a refuge. Hopefully this wont be for long term, but she will need to prove she has no chance of living with her parents (if she's under 18 they will contact her parents and ask).

So if they are happy for her to be there, but she just left cause she wanted a house for herself, then its not going to happen. well unless her mum and dad are willing to lie for her and say she is not welcome back.

Could she not rent somewhere? Im not sure if she's working or on benifits, she will get help eitherway though as she has a child under 5.

Yes shes very suitable for council accomadation, but to get somewere fast shell need a note from her parents and whoever shes staying with stateing they do not want them in there house anymore if she doesent do this theyll be on a waiting list for ages other candidates will come over her.Shell be put in bed and breakfast accomadation for a while untill they find a 1 or 2 bed flat suitable it wont be very nice the council only igve minimal accomadation and upgradeing the rest is down to her garden work, decorating etc..but insist if you dont like the colour on them emulsioning it.there will also be no carpets its a regulation they have to remove old carpets no matter the condition.

Seriously don't bother with London- she'll never get housed there. She is better off approaching her own council as they have a responsibility to house her whereas another council doesn't as residents come higher points wise.
She needs to apply to the housing department at her local council to go on the list.
She may be entitled to housing benefit from her local council who will pay all her rent if she is not working and part of it if she is. you also get council tax benefit which you apply for at the same time. The council will also be able to advise on landlords who take benefit and organisations who will help with the deposit. If she in reciept of income support or similar she may be able to get a loan from the benefits agency to help with the rent in advance and the council may also have a rent deposit scheme.
Thank goodness for my mother who worked for the benefits agency for 10 years. If she needs help it's out there and she's entitled to it to help her raise her child. Good luck.

depending on her age and her circumstances, if she goes into her local council offices they will give her forms to sign and then she will be put on a waiting list and if she has no where to live then they will place her in a b 'n' b. When she is at the top of the housing list she will get a place, also look into the housing association.

For anyone to buy a house is not easy. I was raised my whole life by a single mother along with my sister and we've always had a house. She's a nurse that makes a little over $50,000 a year. You do need a decent salary if you're single with a kid(s) and you're not going to be able to afford anything lavish, but I do know many single parents with 1-3 kids that have houses. It really just depends on how much money you make and what you can afford.

I had the same problem I got on to the housing list when I first found out I was pregnant and it took me a full year even though I declared homelessness and was sleeping at my sisters, so keep going to the housing office and demand a house or you will wait forever.

its not that easy she would have to have a reason for living in london and not just a whim she should be housed in the area she lives in and will be given top priority as she is technically homeless with a child best thing to do is ask the local housing office in the area she want to be and the one she is in and see what they can offer her the housing problem is a big on in london and will only be offered accomodation that they have and it maynot be what she wants and could even be in a bad area that no one wants see the homeless people in your area and see what they recommend

I'm sorry but why the hell should she get one i found out i was having my son when i was 20 yrs old, and the 1st thing me and my boyfriend did was start looking for a house to buy we made the mistake so why the hell should all tax pays, pay for it we brought a house stayed in we get no money from income support tax credits we get 17.50 a week from child benefit.
Because we both work to support are child.
If you are going to have a child then get off you back side and get a job and pay for it yourself!!!!!!!!!!
