Is it true that the fans NY Rangers and Islanders once had a massive brawl at Shea Stadium during a Mets game? I think it was during the late 70's or early 80's. I'm trying to document all the incidences of documented fighting between Rangers and Islander fans.

And I have checked wikipedia, but alas I can not find the full information of this incident, just snippets.

There is a NY Times article that mentions this in passing, however I can't not seem to locate the entire article on the web for free.

After Pelle Lindbergh, the flyers goalie, died after crashing his porsche.

Rangers fans changed the chant to "Buy a porsche Potvin, Buy A Porsche".
They truly had a hate on for him.

I moved to NYC in 79 and heard about the story from hockey buddies around 81. I think the incident took place in the spring of 1979 when the teams were competing in the stanley cup semis and the baseball season had just gotten underway.

That's how I remember it, although I never actually read or saw anything referencing the melee.

I have never heard of this. I'm going to say no. Why carry it over to baseball? Ranger fans are the most ignorant fans in the league though, so I wouldn't be surprised.

No, i do not think it is true, because Shea stadium is a baseball stadium.

Never heard of it, but we still chant "Potvin Sucks" every single night. We've added "Poti does, too!" when the Islanders are in town.
