The WPA or "Works Progress Administration" was a fedearally funded program under the New Deal during the great depression. There were several different acts that were instituted most notably the Federal Art Project which was federal dollars being pumped to aspiring artists. There were several other divisions of the WPA but all were attempts to get money into the lowest teir of society and make different attempts to boost the economy.

It was the Works Progress Administration, part of FDRs New Deal. It put people to work during the Great Depression. Some examples are: Architects designed new libraries and schools, contractors built them, artist painted murals in schools and other public buildings. Those skilled in the theatre put together performances for children. Historians and journalist interviewed and recorded the information of former slaves. Works Progress Administration was part of the New Deal by FDR to provide new roads and new structures performed by the unemployed. FDR believed that men had to have pride and in that pride was the idea of bringing home money for the family and working without charity alone . Unfortunately in 1937 the Supreme Court declared the WPA unconstitutional because they believed that men were forced to work to receive benefits and tended to discriminate againat those who were unable to work That would be how the Court understood the WPA. It was a conservative court who did not care for FDR because in the same year he tried to stack he court in his favor by addong 6 justices from 9 to 15.

Works Progress Administration. In NYC, the government hired artist and craftsmen to work on buildings in Manhattan. And hired unskilled workers to cut down trees throughout the country to build highways.
