I'm thinking of moving out of So. California and I want to move somewhere where it is much less expensive, I can have horses, and still have a good job. I'm really an office person by profession. I have driven through many states but is seems like the most smaller towns wouldn't have work for me. What to people do for a living in smaller towns if they are not farmers or in the tourist industry?

Small town if you are not a Farmer or in Motel business or Retailing you are on State Welfare. If you are looking for a riding horse then you may be able to afford one, a racing one is too expensive to buy and maintain. You get down to some Ranches in the suburbs, America is full of them, befriend some inmates there like a Vet or the Horsekeeper and they will be able to get a cheap horse. Or you can advertise in the classified in a local town for leads to buy a horse in the Pet section.

We have a small farm here in central NH. My husband is a master plumber and works for a union. I work part-time as a prep cook in a restaurant. We don't keep horses because of the insurance liability. Plus they are expensive to maintain. Special hay, a large animal vet isn't real common in the country around here. If you don't have a trailer you have to bring them to the vet.You have to have them shooed(Sp) on a regular basis. Those are just some of the basic requirements. There are several neighbors that have horses and they are self-employed or semi-retired. A lot of people who live here in the country travel an hour or more to their job. Medical workers are a big profession as well as state/government workers.
