My young teddy bear hamster escaped her cage about 2 weeks ago. When we couldn't locate her, we gave up, and purchased a full grown female black bear hamster (possibly pregnant).
Two weeks later, little teddy bear hamster showed up very hungry and thirsty, but very much still alive. Now we have TWO hamsters!
Is there a chance that they would get along and be able to live in the same large cage with each other? Or we will have to go purchase a brand new cage (or find a new home) for one of them?

We have 12 of the Syrian hamsters and we've had to separate all into their own cages. We have tried to keep males together and females in another cage together and almost lost some from fighting. We have 7 Teddy Bears, 2 Black bears, 1 Panda bear, 1 long haired albino, and 1 solid white with black eyes. Even the father and his 3 sons can't be put near each other. Our 2 white ones we got together and they had to be separated a few nights ago, they're 4 months old. You will need to go and get another cage set up. Otherwise they can and will fight to the death. Females that are pregnant, are extremely territorial. The other one will eat her babies. Also you might want to take the first hamster to the vet for a check up since she was without food and water for 2 weeks. My in-laws had one that escaped and they left food and water out for 2 weeks then took it up thinking it was dead. 2 weeks after that my oldest girl was helping clean a closet and she heard something, it was the hamster. It was also thirsty, but not hungry, it had a stockpile of food from prior escapes. It died from drinking too much water the next morning. Give it only small amounts of water and food to start with. We believe their hamster drowned from drinking too much water, much like a human can do. Be very careful she need special attention given in regards to food and water. If for any reason you can't get the hamster to the vet, call them and ask for exactly what to do. I'd hate for the same thing that happened to my in-laws hamster, happen to yours.

The only hamsters we ever put together as room mate are the Syrians and Campbell's Russian Dwarfs. All our cages have a Syrian and either one or two of the dwarfs in them. We very rarely have any problems. One perk is the two breeds can't mate, so we can mix males and females together.

Really depends on the type of hamsters, dwarf hamsters usually do much better. Problem is sexing hamsters. Pet shop owners often get it wrong. The safest way with hamsters is to always house them seperate, especially bigger ones. I would talk to someone you might know who'e had the same type of hamster as you for a long time about sexing them. I would suggest to keep them clean, put a dish of sand in the cage, they love to roll in it and it keeps them from smelling. also get the biggest wheel you can find to fit in the cage, that way you can put a drom of oil on the pivot and stop the squeaking witout the hamster getting it's back greased up.

I had several hamsters. I had a cage with what I thought was two girls and oops...had a whole bunch one day. I finally separated boys and girls and did just fine. I also had a problem with them being escape artists....what do you do for that???

But honestly, you should have no problems putting the two girls together. I had 4 girls in one cage and 6 boys in the other. We did just fine!

Be careful w/ introduction, the one that lived there before will become territorial and want to kill the other. Don't just throw them in together. Monitor there "meetings" and "introductions" but don't leave them together to reside in the same home.

you'll have to get another cage. hamsters will only live together if they are from the same litter. if your other female is pregnant she will severly hurt the other one or eat her babies if she percieves her as a threat.

We tried this and they will hurt each other. If they were not raised in the same cage they can fight and bite each other causing injury. I wouldn't do it!

NOO!! no hamsters are good Together.

male and female---LOTS OF BABIES (most of which will be cannibalized of the mother)

male and male----- fight over territory (dominance issues)

female and female----- fight over territtory, and one or both may accidentally already be pregnant

Gerbils are better!!
