I had my first ultrasound today and they say I'm 8 wks. They could not find a heartbeat on the ultrasound machine, they did not use a stethoscope. Is this normal or should I be concerned?

I just had a check at 11 weeks, nothing. My doc said that it is normal not to hear anything until 12 weeks or later (even the one week makes a difference.)
Good luck!

My OB's ultrasound technician said that usually by 7 weeks you can see the heartbeat on the ultrasound. I had an u/s done at 7 weeks & 1 day and saw the heartbeat flicker on the screen. You won't be able to hear the heartbeat until 12 weeks. They can't hear your baby's heartbeat with a stethascope, they have to use a dopplar machine to hear it. Even when I was 40 weeks, I couldn't hear the baby's heartbeat with a stethascope. Did your doctor show concern about not seeing the heartbeat? If not, then I wouldn't worry. If your doctor was worried at all, they should have scheduled another ultrasound in a week or two. If you are concerned then I would suggest it. Best wishes for a healthy pregnancy and baby.

my doctor would not listen for the heartbeat until 13 weeks, on an ultrasound they should be able to at least see it by 8 weeks

They should be able to detect your baby's heartbeat by your next appointment (around 12 weeks) by using a doppler.

Good Luck!

this may sound scary BUT it is not normal to not find a heart beat on the ultrasound machine... you should be able to see the heart plusing..... if not, ask your doctors... tell them you are concern that you see no heart plusing and you cant hear.... i was only 7 weeks when i had a ultrasound and i could clearly see my baby's heart plusing..... as far as listening to the heart beat.... i have a big firgure so i was not able to hear anything... i was concern so i had a ultrasound done and there was a heart plusing... relieves my concern.... i suggest you talk to your doctors..... good luck....

My midwife made me wait until 12 weeks and even then it was very hard to hear and hard to find. I would not be surprised if they couldn't find it this early, the baby is still very little. Congrats!
