I put a jar with a metalic lable into the microwave (didn't know it was foil) and saw sparks. I immediately stopped it and tried to heat water in it to see if it still worked. It does work, but I noticed a small burn mark on the inside of the door. Should I throw it out? My husband is still using it, much to my dismay. He taped foil over the outside of the door in line with the burn mark on the inside. We can't afford another one right now. Any suggestions?

Yes, continue to use the microwave. My only concern would be whether the shielding on the door was compromised. When you look through the door, you'll see a screen that blocks the microwave energy from leaking out of the microwave, which would be a health hazard if you're too close. You mention a small burn mark on the inside of the door. As long as the screen or any metal parts of the door have not been damaged, and the gasket between the door and the microwave is intact, you're OK. If the burn is in plastic, it's of no consequence. The foil your husband taped to the outside of the door is probably unnecessary.

The microwave should be fine. As long as the burn didn't burn through the protective screen in the door there is also no need to tape foil on the outside of the door. Metal sparks in the microwave when the microwaves bounce off since it can't penetrate the metal. Its like shooting a laser and having it bounce off. The biggest risk from metal in the microwave is having the microwave bounce back to the magnatron and damaging it but if its still working theres little to worry about. Just try not to do it again.

we have had that happen plenty of times before at our house. but the microwave is still in great use! so im pretty sure it will be just fine, as long as the burn mark didnt go too deep

The microwave is still safe to use. The little amount of sparking will not harm the unit.

relies upon what you have been defrosting on the foil. uncooked meats and fish could in no way be placed immediately on aluminum. it would be superb, especially using fact it wasn't even in there a minute.
