Start by reading and asking questions. Most of the answers have already been placed on this web site, and any that have not can be asked. You will get all kinds of answers from the absurd to the very educated. Just select the ones that make sense. You can also read car magazines and newspaper articles to get an understanding of a lot of the technology and terminology.

1. Play Gran Turismo 1 and 2. That'll give you some basic taxonomy on at least performance cars (with a bias towards Gran Turismo). 3 and 4 cut back on the information and emphasized not letting you drive the cars you want.

2. Read http://wikicars.org/en/Main_Page and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki

3. Find a general automotive forum you like. Me, I like the SomethingAwful automotive subforum. If you go there, lurk for a while unless you like wasting your 10 dollars.

4. Buy an unreliable car. Like an RX-7 or a Datsun 280Z or an old British car or a Mitsubishi Eclipse. You'll learn soon enough what every single part in your car is and what it does, and how to fix a lot of them. Because you'll have to.

In some cases, the number associated with the vehicle is just an arbitrary number given by the company, and in other cases, it means something.

For instance, my BMW 525i. The first number identifies the body series, which is a 5 series (mid sized sedan). The second two numbers are the engine size (2.5L) and the letter is the trim line.

If you have an interest in a certain type of car, I would suggest joining a discussion forum and doing some reading.
