My cousin had her baby this past Thursday. My grandmother, grandfather, and little cousin went to see her. She had it about 11 a.m. and we went to see her at 4 p.m. (after school). So, there was around 5 hours in between.

After visiting for about 5 minutes they moved her into a more comfortable room. They came in with a wheel chair but she said that she wanted to walk. Well, my grandmother told her that she needs to look after her self....and that "in the old days" women stayed mostly in bed for 9 days. And told her that she would be feeling it later.

My cousin said she felt fine and wasn't hurting at all....so, what was the problem?

Thanks for the answers.

I was up and walking around very soon after all of my children. (natural birth) Unless there were complications there should be no reason to stay immobile - heck they send you home after 24 hours!

In the "old" days women also died of pneumonia and pulmonary embolisms. As long as the delivery went okay, and she is able to, there is no reason why she should not get up and walk. Her recovery time will be quicker the sooner she gets up and moves around. Now, she doesn't need to go run a marathon, but short walks up and down the hall of the hospital should be okay. However, when they transport you in from one place to another in a hospital, they must use a bed or a wheel chair.

NO you must get up and walk as soon as possible I walked from the delivery room with my 3rd child. If you lie still the blood will not circulate and could clot in your legs. The clot could then go to your brain or lungs.

you can walk. It helps keep the blood from clotting to. If you lost to much blood during delivery you might become light head when you stand. I checked myself out of the hospital 12 hours after delivering my second son because they took him to a different hospital and I wanted to be there with him. Not resting made my stomach hurt really really bad.

old wives tales, they didn't have all the technology we have now so they just stayed in bed just in case something went wrong, i had my daughter and we were at the flea market the next day! i was bed ridden for 5 months with her so i felt 100% better once she was born!

If you are not hooked up to any IV's anymore, you need to walk, this is how a lot of blood clots form!!!
