Ipod battery life and charging?

Whenever I charge my I-pod, it says that it's fully charged when the cycle is complete. However, whenver I take it off the charger to play it by itself, it dies after a few seconds. Is there any way around this?

It sounds like your battery may be dead. This shouldn't happen.
