What is firmware on psp?

and can you lower it to a 1.5 so that you can play emulators on psp with out harming the psp

Firmware is the operating system of PSP (just like Windows XP on computer).

I think you can lower to 1.5 from any firmware up to 3.03. However, it is very risky and can make your PSP unuseable.
