In your opinon what is the best vaccum cleaner? How often do you vaccume your carpets? Do you have pets and children? How long have you had this 'best vaccume'?

I need lots of answers, it's more of a polling question, however I felt it was best put here.

Also, how often do you have to empty the dust cup (everytime, every 2 uses, every 4+ uses?) Is it a bagless?

I got a Dirt Devil one for christmas, and its the new blue one, this by far has been the best vacuum. I vacuum 4-5 times a day ( I have a dog that is shedding very badly right now and a 8 month old trying to crawl) The only draw back is that it isn't bagless, but that's alright. It has a very strong suction on it.

I've never liked Dirt Devil before because I thought they were cheap and didn't work well, but this one is proving me wrong!

Dirt is more than the vacuum.

1) Buy a carpet that is impregnated with Teflon. This helps reduce staining and also serves to lubricate the carpet fibers. Both against traffic and cleaning.
2) Buy an upright vacuum. You want all the weight applied to the beater bar. Eureka commerical vacuums last about 12 to 18 years (have two, haven't worn either of them out yet.) No tools required to change the belt either. The beater bar should have one bar and one bristle brush. This vibrates the carpet, allowing the dirt to be suspended and sucked up in the vacuum. Brushes and suction just don't cut it alone on pile carpet.
3) Buy the high filter bags and replace them when they are 1/4 to 1/3 full - don't wait until its bulging! Replace the belt every three months or so. Don't wait for it to break. It stretches over time, which will allow the belt to slip and the beater bar action will be impaired. These belts are like 50 cents.
4) Get a boot tray and everyone should remove their shoes right near the door. (Significant contributor to carpet dirt.)
5) Make sure your dryer vents outside and that you clean the filter between every load and clean out the vents twice a year. You can really cut down on dust if you hang your clothes outside. The dryer just beats them to death, but everything gets so soft!

I have a bagless upright Dirt Devil, and this is the best vacuum I have ever owned. I've had it for about 7 or 8 years now, and it still works perfectly. We have four dogs and live on a dirt road where sand is constantly being dragged into the house, (not to mention a teenager who sucks pennies and toothpicks up in it!) and this vacuum has not only survived, but still has great suction! I use it at least once a day.

I have the Eureka Altima Turbo Bagless Spin Duster. Works very well. We have 3 kids, a dog and one furry cat. We have a forced air furnace. I have had it for a year. I empty the canister and clean the filter at every use. It has great attachments to do just about everything, the duster is especially nice. I will never go back to bagged vac again. Hope that helps.

I have a old model Dyson,Red and Purple dont know the model it is about 10 years old.Second hand.
It does a first class job of vacuuming the cats fur and fluff from the carpets,I only use it once a week and it is mostly about a quarter full when I have finished each time, once around my bungalow. I empty it each time and wash the tube container each time, and brush out all the other filters . I believe as long as you look after your Dyson it will look after you.

Any brand will do. The important is you must know where to use, how often you will use and what kind of rubbish you will remove. Once you know those things look for the specification of vacuum that is fitted to it. Then follow manufacturers recommendation in operation and maintenance of the unit.
