I believe opals are really considered unlucky because they have an annoying habit of changing their appearance, making a previously valuable stone depreciate in value suddenly. However this can work the other way too, where a previously poor specimen gains a new fire .

In classical times, opals were considered very lucky. Walter Scott's novel "Anne of Geierstein" concerns a cursed opal. This is often credited as the source of the superstition about opals. I've never heard of any real life stories of cursed stones.

in nineteenth century Britain , when opal was considered bad luck for anyone not born in October. This was largely because Sir Walter Scott, portrayed opal as bringing bad luck and death to one of his fictional heroines, Anne of Girstein. However, Queen Victoria, who adored opals, helped to dispel this notion by giving opals to all of her daughters, whether born in October or not. Thus, opal gained a wider popularity than ever, especially when the brighter gem and black opals from Australia became available.

I heard the same thing and I love Opals but I was not born in October so I will not buy one for my self. It is supposed to be bad luck only if you buy it for your self or give someone else the money to buy it for you. I do not know if this is true or not but with my luck at this time I am not willing to risk it

That's what I've always heard too. I had one (not born in October) and had no difference in luck, but I did lose the ring. :-(

I inherited my mother's opals and have not worn them.
