The Vietnamese revolution against France has much to do with Vietnam's long history of ousting those who tried to conquer that country. The Chinese, Mongols, Japanese, Champa, Siamese (now Thailand) and America are among the other countries and kingdoms who unsuccessfully tried to dominate and control Vietnam. France was doomed to a revolution against them even before they invaded Vietnam and colonized what was then Indochina.

France broke their promise to Ho Chi Minh's Viet Minh forces to liberate Vietnam after World War II in exchange for their resistance against Japanese occupation of Vietnam. Instead, France tried to retake their colonies in Southeast Asia. This lead to the French War or first Indochina War. France was eventually defeated by the Viet Minh at the Battle of Dien Bien Phu and then to the Geneva Accords.

The Geneva Accords was to temporarily split the country into the communist controlled North and democratically controlled South and reunite it after a countrywide election overseen by the UN. The vote never happened. The U.S. took over France's involvement in South Vietnam, and the rest is history under another topic.

The communist party in Vietnam was founded and organized by Ho Chi Minh. Ho was instrumental in starting communist parties in France and China and studied communist doctrine in the Soviet Union. Ho organized the Communist Party in Vietnam under the shadow of liberating and reunifying Vietnam.

Vietnam was split between the Communist countries and the free countries at the end of WWII. Just like Korea was. The communist countries invaded the free countries and we sent troops to resist them. Unfortunately, the Democratic Presidents didn't understand the concept of VICTORY. Something they share with today's Democrats.

The simple facts are South Vietnam wanted to be free, and be a democratic nation, and the North wanted control of that. Don't commie's always? The Vietcong was started by the French. Go figure eh? Here are some links to help you out with your questions.

the answer above is very good but omits the cia/american duplicity in their dealings with ho chi minh both before and shortly after the end of world war two.
it is a documented fact that ho, an american ally at the time, wanted an american style constitutional government run by the vietnamese. this was presented by the cia to president truman. truman sided with france in it's disasterous recolonization efforts.

Chairman Ho was trained by the CIA(OSS) to fight the Japs...then he took what he learned and used it to fight first the French then the US and allies...the split between the North and South was a little more complicated
