I've always considered Guildford a city; it has a university and a cathedral. Also, the football team are called Guildford City FC. However, my friend worked on Guildford council and states it is cathedral town. Who is correct?

Years ago people made a town a city if it built a cathedral - not any more for now there are several cathedral towns with no city status. I believe it to be only recent

i always thought if its has a cathedral then its a city...
lichfield a small place but its a city
i do recall tho once in the newspaper of a town applying for city status..so perhaps guildford as nether applied or it may of been turned down
what difference does it make any way guildford still remain a nice place does the angel still light up

Guildford is a cathedral town. They applied to be a city in 2002 but were turned down.

Is Guildford a city, No it isn't it is a suburb of Aldershot, Aldershot is a city though

i live just just down the road from Guildford, and was tought at school that it was in fact a city as it had a cathedral. Not too sure who is correct. Sorry.

no guilford is not a city it is a town i england in surrey. i know i lived there.
