Well if it's any help I had the same problem a few years ago with a ford Granada and it turned out to be the vacuum pipe,apparently when you kick down it loses the vacuum which make it change down a gear!!

Nothing to do with the clutch cable as its automatic! (previous answer). Other answer is more likely, that is the kickdown cable. It may have stretched slightly. Refer to your workshop manual if you have one, for the correct adjustment or just trial and error. Make sure you haven't got a mat under the accelerator pedal stopping the full travel. I know that sounds basic but I've seen this problem before and the owner had put new mats in and it restricted the pedal travel.

Agree it may be cable adjustment, but I'd also check the kickdown switch itself. It's usually a button on the floor beneath the accelerator pedal, & after a few years use & grime, it may just be sticking. As with many motoring maladies, WD40 & a large hammer may be the answer!

If you check for full travel on the pedal and make sure that it is seated correctly when fully depressed should work. Also check transmission fluid level is ok.

sound like the clutch is either slipping or worn down.would also try to tighten the clutch cable
