In politics, the liberals ("Democrats" in American politics) are on the left, and the conservatives ("Republicans" in American politics) are on the right. This originated several hundred years ago, when in Europe, the Parliament (like our Congress) had the Liberal party seated on the left side of the chamber, and the right side of the chamber was reserved for the conservatives. The middle part of the room was reserved for people who weren't on either extreme end. To be "Left WING" or "Right WING" means to be at the extreme end of the political scale on whichever side they were on.

At the very extremes of Leftwing - is communism (prime example being Stalin's russia). The basic theory is that everyone is equal and deserves fair chances in life - that's something that old Labour (in UK) used to uphold. Obviously you can be slightly left wing and want everyone to have fair oppertunities with out being communist.
To be far right wing is to be facist (prime example being Hitler's Nazi Germany). Generally have big prejudices against certain groups in society. Tend to believe that if you are born poor, you deserve it and should stay poor. Obviously not all parties are that extreme.
Personally I think moral stature tells us that everyone deserves equal oppertunities regardless of their background, that everyone has the right to access free education, healthcare and emergency aid. Something that right-wing or conservative groups don't always agree with.

If you're asking about ideology, left wing refers to ideology that is more liberal or socialist, right wing refers to ideology that is more consevative. On the extremes of the scale, the far left is Communism, the far right is Fascism. Political parties in most developed countries are usually centrist with leanings to either the left or right

They're opposites. One goes on one side of the bird and one on the other. The right wing on the right side. The left wing on the left side.
