If he leaves, it'll be to become the head coach in Dallas. He's said in the past that it's his dream job (born and raised in Gladewater, TX), and the fact that they haven't hired anyone yet indicates that there's at least smoke there (ie. that they're looking at someone on the Bears and/or Colts).

He's talked about how it was upsetting to be paid so low considering he's made a playoff run, won a Coach of the Year award, and now won an NFC title. He made it clear he wanted an extention very badly last year, and the Bears front office refused to even talk.

It's not an issue of whether the Bears are currently willing to pay. I'm sure they'll make a large offer to him. The only question is if they're too late. Lovie generally doesn't make public statements about things like this, so we'll probably find out in the next few days.

However, now that he's an NFC champ head coach, there's not a chance in hell he becomes the defensive coordinator somewhere.

EDIT: To those saying he has a year left:
If someone doesn't want to be there, they'll generally let them leave. Being a head coach requires 110% of your energy, and if they know the coach would rather be somewhere else they won't often hold them back. See Jon Gruden. They'd get compensation, but they'll rarely require someone to work.
I think Lovie will be back in Chicago. However, given prior comments back when he was trying to get his contract extended last offseason and his comments about how Dallas is his dream job, it's not out of the realm of possibility that his displeasure with the Bears and childhood dreams about the Cowboys could lead him to leave.

I doubt that there is any truth to this rumor whatsoever. Why would Lovie Smith leave the Bears? Since when does Lovie Smith not have a contract?

Can't see Lovie stepping down as the head coach now that he has been to a SuperBowl.

Why would he do that??
The guy took his team to the Super Bowl.
If he doesn't re- sign with Chicago, then he will be head coach of another NFL franchise in '07.

no. for the great job he has done this past year, he will rightfully be rewarded with a new contract with the bears.
