why do people throw salt over their shoulder for good luck?

superstition wise it is the salt that is supposed to scare away the devil sneaking up behind your back. just like when you spill the salt it is said to be bad luck (its a waste of something holy).

because it is suppose to be bad luck if you spill salt so if you do you are suppose to throw some over your shoulder. don't know why.
