Anytime I see weight questions posted under the Dance category I become a little suspicious due to the tendency of many dancers to obsess about weight in an unhealthy manner. The reason for this suspicion is that dance teachers have virtually no business telling their students to lose weight. Only the teachers of professional dance companies or elite ballet schools can get away with doing that. Anyone else is a bad dance teacher.

Sure enough, you posted under the Diseases & Conditions category that you suffer from anorexia. So you're either playing mind games with yourself, or you're playing games with the people on Yahoo Answers in order to get responses that feed into your self-perception that you are overweight. The guy who told you that you need professional help is 100% correct and I pray to God that you tell your parents about your anorexia. They love you and anorexia is not something that you can handle by yourself.

Also, I don't care if you were 5'4" and 140 pounds - no dance teacher should be telling you to lose weight! That is only for your doctor to be telling you! If you've got a dance teacher who is telling you this, please find another teacher or studio, as you are in a very unhealthy situation.

Anyone else who responds with tips on how you can lose weight is aiding and abetting an accidental suicide!

A qualified dance instructor should be judging a student based on talent, not weight. Weight should only be an issue to you personally if you feel that it is keeping you from reaching your full dance potential and hindering your endurance. If you feel that you are a great dancer and have talent now, then your weight shouldn't matter. Others have given diet advice so I won't add any more of it. Just wanted to throw my particular thought into the mix.

If you are free of eating disorders:
In order to drop 20 lbs for good, you might have to do some major commitments. If you say you suck at dieting maybe you should go talk to a nutritionist. He/she will examine your diet and will recommend what to take out and what to add. In general, to change your body, you'll have to change your lifestyle. Try to not eat past 8 pm at all. Whatever you eat late in the evening is likely to be stored as fat. But do eat 3 meals before that time. Do not skip breakfast, or else your body will be tricked into thinking that there isn't enough food out there, your metabolism will slow down and you will tend to store more fat. Also, do you drink soda? How many cans per week? If you drink soda at all - reduce it to one can of soda per week. Switch to unsweetened drinks. It will be tough at the beginning, but then you will notice that you don't crave them anymore because your taste changed. How much do you like potatoe chips or potatoe fries? If you eat a lot of those, reduce down to really small number. Like, you can have one or two chips, but no more than that.
Instead of that, get used to low calorie snacks - carry a bag of carrots instead of bag of chips, pack some selery sticks for a midd-day snack, an apple instead of a candy bar and so on.
Use every free minute that you have to exersise.

If you have anorexia: you need to change your diet uder nutritionist's supervision. I know it may be hard to go to them because you think they will lock you up in a mental institution (they won't) or you think they will make you eat and they will make you fat. None of these is true. They won't lock you up. They will talk to you and explain you how your metabolism works, how can you eat to stay thin, healthy and strong. If you diet without knowing how to, you might damage muscles including your heart muscle. That would be a total disaster to a dancer, wouldn't it?

Please do not follow diets that tell u not to eat this and that! There are no real fast way to loose weight..... U need to just eat smaller portions and your plates must look approx like this:
!/2 veggies
/4 Proteines (meat, beans, eggs)
1/4 cereals (potatoes, pastas, rice, bread)

Drink at least 8 X 8oz of water a day (to help digest your food and prevent dehydration)

And try to cut plain sugar (deserts, candies, etc) to a minimum

Leave your computer alone and go for a walk or bicycle ride!

In no time at all u'll bring down your weight!

Cardiovascular exercise and portion controls are the keys. My wife, who is a ballet dancer, does aerobics a few times a week. Her teachers consider her a bit heavy too, though she might not even weigh 100lbs. By doing the aerobics, she can work the same muscles as she would during dance, but does not develop bulky muscles. Above all else, understand that weight loss happens slowly through concerted efforts over time. If you try pills or other diets, you are likely to put the pounds back on over time. Plus, your body may be robbed of the nutrients it needs to survive. Best of luck to you.
