Hi all I'm 15 and a half weeks pregnant and was just wondering if feta cheese is safe to eat - all the blurb says no to goats cheese but as this is processed was wondering if it would be ok???
What do you reckon?

This is one of the safe ones. it is pasteurised so just fine.
If you have any doubts about any of the items you are eating you could ask your midwife.
Alternatively I found the National Childbirth Trust website very useful from what foods to eat to what to pack for the hospital.

Soft, unpasteurized cheeses like feta, Brie, Camembert, and goat - as well as ready-to-eat meats like hot dogs and deli meats - may contain Listeria, bacteria that cause mild flu-like symptoms in most adults but can be very dangerous for unborn babies. Listeriosis, the infection caused by the bacteria, can cause miscarriage, premature birth, or severe illness or death of a newborn. Cheddar, American cheese, cottage cheese, cream cheese, and yogurt are safe choices during pregnancy.

Fine if pasterised. Minute risk even if not.

"Previously, it was suggested that pregnant women should avoid soft cheese all together. But recently, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) have recommended that during pregnancy, women may take any soft cheese if it’s manufactured from pasteurized milk."

"Previously," as in "very recently and in fairly limited circles." Pregnant women didn't put up with all the don't-eat-it hysteria not so long ago.

Note comments:

"Pregnant women have simply allowed themselves to be browbeaten by the farcical concept of a "zero-risk" life, an obsessive fixation on a narrow selection of risks to the exclusion of balance or moderation.

Presumably they should all choose bedrest for the last six months because violating any one of these dietary requirements is less likely to lead to problems than getting in a car and exposing themselves and their babies to the risk of a car accident. How much longer before pregnant women are put on oxygen at four months and encased in a nutritive gel at six months?"

According to March of Dimes, you should steer clear of Feta cheese, along with any other soft cheeses made with unpasteurized milk.

Congrats, and good luck on a healthy pregnancy!

are you sure about no goat or feta? i thought it was just warning against unpasteurized goat and feta cheese. you might want to check with your doctor. i ate with my 1st and am still eating, but always making sure it's pasteurized.

the american pregnancy association says to avoid all SOFT cheeses. It says to avoid these types:brie, camembert, Roquefort, feta, gorgonzola and also any "veined" cheeses.

hope that helps!

I am not for sure so You might want to call up ur dr and see. Also personally I hate goat cheese..it sounds gross and I don't even want to think about eating it.

No offence to you..to each their own...

But I suggest asking your dr 1st....s/he will know what to tell you better than I do.
