A car has been dumped in a private shared drive outside my garage blocking entry and subsequently had it's tyres slashed, windows broken etc. The police can do nothing and the council say that I will have to pay for it's removal. (No other residents are particularly affected as they can still access their properties). Shouldn't the council recover the cost from the owner? I don't see why I should have to pay £75 to get rid of this selfish idiot's car.

As pointed out by Byte I can't move it onto the road because the police know I am the only person likely to have done it!

You need to contact the dvla , and for a small fee you can find out who the registered owner is , then you must send them a letter explaining that if the car is not removed within 7 day`s it will be disposed of as it is causing an obstruction .
You must also put on the car window screen a note saying that the car must be removed within 7 day`s as it is causing an obstruction .
Keep a copy of everything , take photo`s if you can ( take a photo to prove you had put a note on the screen aswell ) then if after 7 day`s it has not been removed then call the scrap man to come and take it away to be disposed of !
As the car was on your property you have the right to dispose of it after you have given fair warning of your intention`s .
You could also push it onto the road and let the police deal with it as it is not your car . legally there is nothing they can do to you !regardless if it was on your property or not , just tell them that children were trying to steal it and they pushed it there and you are not allowing it back onto your property , they will then have to move it !

You can do like those above suggest- push it onto the road so the council have to deal with it, or there's another way. Check your local paper for the "Cars Wanted" ads. There should be at least 1 company that offers free srcap car removal. I live in Cambridge, and our local paper lists 9 adverts of people or companies who offer this service.

All you can do is inform the owner that you will be charging storage (starting now, you can't make it retroactive) If he fails to pay, you can go to court to get a judgment against the vehicle, and eventually have it sold for non payment. It's easier to report t to your local police as an abandoned vehicle.

You may wish to contact a junk/savlage yard. Often they will tow for free and either recover the cost from the registered owner, or will sell it for the cost of the metal (squash it then sell it). I'd take photo's of the vehicle prior to having it removed, then if the owners try something, you would have photo's of the vehicles condition and how it was blocking access to your property.

under refuse nad disposal act 1975 the local authrity have a duty to remove abandoned untaxed vehicles even if on private property
PS Do NOT push into the road as you will then be commiting the offence of obstruction and YOU could be prosecuted

Good luck

Put it into neutral and push it into the road in the middle of the night when nobody is around. Then when everyone realizes that it's in the way, someone will have to deal with it.
