At least 8. Most people work from 9 to 5, but some to work 12 hour shifts. Unfortunatly, with people living sometimes an hour away from their work, this cuts into that time, plus if it takes you an hour to get ready, you don't get much rest time.

The minimum used to be 8 hours between a maximum 13 hour shift. That should be only if not enough staff, big contract/job taken on and not the normal working hours unless contracted and agreed in advance...I think

I work for a major oil company in the UK and we are not permitted to return to work a new shift within 11 hours of completing the old one.

e.g. If I finish at 6 p.m. today, the earliest I can resume work is 5 a.m. tomorrow.

Some companies have set rules on how long you have to be off in between shifts, Safeway (at least my local store) requires you to have a minimum of 10 hours off in between shifts. Some places don't care how long you have in between shifts, they just want you to be at work when you're scheduled and who cares if you had a chance to sleep.
