Prejudice comes literally from 'pre-judging'. All the 'national character' studies that were a rage in WWII America, legitimised sweeping generalisations about the 'enemy' - like the 'suicidal' Japanese, the'humourless' Germans, the Italian 'mafia', the 'terrible' Turks, the 'over-sexed' Arabs and so on. It became easier to understand and diminish the worth of enemy lives, so that these could be wiped out without any qualms. Racism began with a disdain for those with a darker skin ( American history of African slavery made it that much easier to diminish the dark-skinned, so that they could be denied their rights and resources with a clear conscious by the white majority). It is only recently that the two terms have begun to merge, confusing race and ethnicity, so that any prejudice towards a particular ethnic group is dubbed racism.

It speaks volumes for the power and influence of Jews in American sociology that prejudice against them has a different name, 'anti-semitism' and remains to this day the deadliest social sin in the US - ask Mel Gibson.

Racism incorporates prejudice, but also includes bias, where you favour one race over another, and base decisions upon that. For example if two people are going for a job, one Asian, the other Negro. A prejudiced decision would be to decide before any interview that the Negro would not get the job. A biased decision would be to decide that if the Negro was better, then he would get the job, but if they are about the same then it will go to the Asian. It is still racism, but a different manifestation.

Prejudice is: (1) an unfavorable opinion or feeling formed beforehand or without knowledge, thought, or reason. (2)unreasonable feelings, opinions, or attitudes, esp. of a hostile nature, regarding a racial, religious, or national group.

Prejudice is more about judging without knowing facts. This is not necessarily racism as that does not always have racial tones. Racism is being biased against another race irrespective of facts!

Your "details" blurb makes no sense -- you should read things over before posting.

As others have pointed out, 'prejudice' is a more general term meaning pre-judging, or judging before having the facts.

Racism is prejudice based on race: "I know you're dumb, lazy, criminal, whatever, because you are of the X race."

If you have some other question in mind, try to write it in a way that's intelligible, which your "Details" blurb is not.

racism is a prejudice but it has more to deal with thinking one race is better or superior to others. prejudices can come in varying shapes and forms. people can have prejudices about economic status, race, political affiliations, sexual orientation, and even down to what type of car or home or school you go to.

Yeah there is, racism is a prejudice against race, you can't be racist against someone for the religion. Prejudice can be religion, race, country of origin, hair color, or whatever other stupid reasons people are prejudice for.
