We bouhgt a 57 yea old cape. The problem is that the owners never installed any heating upstairs. The previous owner installed ducts for the central air but never installed any heating as well. Any ideas about how we can get heating up there. The lowest cost alternative would be best.

Add some heating ducts. Or get a portable heater and place it up stairs. We just bought a huse as well with the same problem, we were told if you put a heat duct up there, it will warm the upstairs. We have an appt to get it done next week. Good Luck!!!

"Lowest cost alternative?" Well if it is installation costs, 240 V electric baseboard with thermostat is hard to beat. Depending on the length these are 2 ft to 8 ft and typically cost $40 to $90.

Least cost to operate would have you trying to take advantage of the duct work you mentioned was already installed and tie it into the existing system (if it is forced air).

heat rises. Open the doors and vents and you may find that's all you need. If more is needed, consider a couple of space heaters which can be turned on when y ou're in the room and turned off when you leave (for safety.)
