The lines in "Sweet Home Alabama" are a response to Young's anti-racist, anti-cross burning "Southern Man" and "Alabama" songs.

Neil Young wrote the song 'Southern Man'. Take a listen to what Neil has to say about men from the southern states.
Then Lynyrd Skynyrd wrote the song 'Sweet Home Alabama', in which LS advised Neil Young - "I hope Neil Young will remember, southern man don't (yes, wrong grammar) need him 'round."
I always wondered if the two parties were able to settle their differences like gentlmen.
