According to the American Association of Medical Colleges in 2005 37,364 people applied for 17,004 positions...this is about a 45% acceptance rate. Extracurricular activities (including health care related experience), GPA, and MCAT all play an important part in the balance of what is needed to get into medical school. Do them all and do them all well. Staying involved and being academically and personally well balanced is important.

Meeting the requirements is key. I know many school require at least a 3.5 GPA through college, MCAT and somewhere between 500-1500 direct patient contact hours within a hospital and most of the time, it cannot be done through volunteering. You need to check each school's graduate requirements. Another thing is, if you don't make it into medical school, you can always go to school to be a Physican's Assistant which is only a 29 month program after your bachelors degree. Hope this helps.

If you have to ask, you won't get in. Become a dental assistant.
