There are nuclear powered submarines. I don't think they would do that with a cruise ship, that's all we need. Although they should, and send it on a long cruise to IRAQ

Yes it could be built at a extremely high cost. Then finding the trained people to operate the shipboard nuclear reactor. It would not be practical to a cruise ship line. Then you have the stigma of the word "nuclear" I live within 40 miles of 4 nuclear power plants. Its real nice not to be lighting my house with oil from the middle east

I know that they could...the navy has ships and submarines that are completely powered by nuclear power. I think the main reasons cruise lines don't power their ships with nuclear power are:
a-it would scare away all their customers
b-it's extremely expensive to get all the equipment

not to mention that if they had a mini-Chernobyl that wouldn't exactly get any good press.

THey easily could. the US navy already uses nuclear power to run alot of thier biggest ships. The problem is getting people to want to get on a cruise ship that has a nuclear reactor below the deck. People get nervous when you say nuclear.

They have nuclear powered aircraft carriers. They are the same length as cruise boats. The big E, Enterprise is nuclear. As was said, the equipment is expensive and the people in general would not like it.

Yeah, but they'd have to really trust the crew and the government probably wouldn't let it happen....not because of some "oil scandal" but just because it could be a pretty dangerous proposition and it really isn't necessary to have nuclear cruise ships.

this was tried with the N/S SAVANNAH a freighter but the cost of operation was prohibitive. The ship was soon decommissioned and is now in Charleston S.C. where her reactor was decommissioned and she is currently waiting for her fate to be decided.

They sure could! And it is a very good idea! However it would be so politically incorrect it will never happen Just think of the oil it would save.
