Unplug it, Open door and turn inner drum by hand Listen carefully. If it sounds like rumbling, feels rough and there is any play in the drum(feels loose). the bearings are shot and the drum has hit the heater. If drum feels smooth and you hear a clicking type noise then the motor is worn and trips/fuse when under load(spin) If none of the above apply, could be a broken wire which shorts when spin starts (more movement in machine) If its a older hotpoint with 1200rpm spin then it needs a new motor.

Sounds like something else is plugged into the same circuit.
Make sure you don't have a microwave or a TV plugged in near by.
Also, if the bearings are wearing out, it's going to take more power to spin. If there's too much load on the spin motor, that would cause the same thing.
Try running an empty cycle without clothes. If it still pops the power, something else is plugged into the circuit.

Stop using it,its most likely the motor brush's that are wearing out, and to carry one using it will end up damaging the motor itself. Depending on the make, but Brush's are anything from £15 to £36 Annew motor will cost you over £100. so get an engineer round asap, and stop using it !!!!

Because the sound is so soothing I might want to take a afternoon nap and then I won't get any washing done.

There might be a problem with your washer's switch, or with the wiring. The microwave we used to have did that a a lot before it gave up the ghost.

I would suggest it was a fuse, is it attached vira an extension lead. Try calling an electrian.
