There are tens of thousands of professional athletes. Giving an accurate answer would be impossible without some kind of parameters concerning your definition of "professional athlete"
An example....Nascar racing is considered a sport, but are the drivers athletes? Professional wrestling is called sports entertainment, but the wrestlers are certainly professional (paid) , athletes.

Unfortunately, that is not possible to answer. People have different opinions on what's professional and what's not, so there can't be an answer. Also, people are constantly retiring and coming into sports, so the numbers vary.
