In the country the living conditions were the same. There were often pumps for water, yet no sewers or sewage system.

In the city people poor often lived in workhouses. They were basically filthy buildings where people would sleep on cots. The streets were full of sewage, cholera and disease ran rampent. Dead carcusses of animals and sometimes even humans, littered the streets. The smell of pollution and such was often overpowering.

If you were rich you would live on a hill and upwind of the factories. This would prevent their sewage and pollution from entering the area. These people also didn't have sewage systems in any way.

Hope this helped a bit!
