Why exactly do we want to preserve fossil fuels? As the total stock goes down, prices will go up. As prices go up, people will have a natural incentive to move to other fuels. If you really want an easy way to reduce usage, start taxing fossil fuels heavily.

Silly, you answered your own question! Sad thing is, nobody in power seems to be listening. We've got to make the alternative fuels cost effective. How realistic is it to modify every gas station in the United States alone at a cost of $200,000 - $300,000 each. It comes down to their bottom line - cost vs. profit. The technology can come and go if we can't figure out how to get the business owners to be able to stay in business through the upgrade process.

You've presented simple solutions without considering the costs and scientifc capabilities of achieving them. But keep working on it! We, the people, are waiting for it!

Any or all of the above. Other alternatives to consider is the use of geothermal power, photovoltaic power sources etc. The only issue with this is that governments need to come to the party and uphold their part with big corporations. In this sense governments need to make 'natural resource' production and profit less attractive to big corporations and offer greater incentives for moves into alternative power and fuel sources.....extremely hard when these big corporations provide significant financial contributions to political campaigns and therefore can be highly influential as to what governments choose to do.
