My wife and I are in the market for a king size mattress. We want something we will be happy with for a long time. We are looking for the best mattress under $2,000 that is soft maybe pillow top but will still help her sore back. I can not seem to find any decent reviews online. Please help.

I found buying a mattress worse than buying a car. We bought a king as well, but observed some of the same information deficit you seem to be seeing.

We bought the Consumer Reports thing on mattresses and that was really helpful. I think it is the June 2005 issue. You can probably check it out of the local library.

The best recommendation I have is to just go to 93 million places and lie down on practically everything they have. See what feels good. Firmer is supposed to be better for bad backs. Anything is better than U shaped.

I would concur with the other poster and not get a pillow top. If you want that extra cushiness get a pad or something to put on top under your sheets that you can change out and wash etc. I know there are people who love pillow tops but I would be worried about what that top on that unturned mattress will look like in 15 years.

And some of them apparently don't need to be turned nowadays. Seemed odd to us and I'm leery of it.

Price doesn't appear to be 100 fixed. In bigger places 1500 is probably 1500 but in smaller places, it really doesn't hurt to say something like "I could go 1400 on that" and see what happens. And ask about when it goes on sale. They all go on sale. Threaten to wait until then if they won't give you the sale price now.

Delivery, set up, and taking away the old one should come with the mattress at no charge, I think. I would insist on that.

We bought a Verlo. If I did it again, I would go for the good firm Sealy Postropedic (sp?) thing. We ended up buying a queen one of those 2 years ago and it is really very nice.

HTH.

The best mattress I have found is the Futon mattress. I have been using one for over 5 years now. I ordered it from a company called Cotton Cloud in Portland, Oregon. Its 10 inch cotton and another 2 inch of wool (one inch on each side). The cost was $400 (now I think the prices have gone up). You still need the 2 box springs on which the mattress will rest.
The beauty of the futon mattress is that it contours to the body, does not disturb the other person when one turns around in bed. No spring noice and it can be folded if you're moving.
Hope it helps.

I bought a Tempur-Pedic. It was about the same price as the 'pillow top' I was looking at, but it is SOOOOOO much more comfortable. I absolutely love it, and sleep so much better. (sounds like an ad, doesn't it? ...maybe I should sell for Tempur-Pedic? LOL. )

Seriously, it took some getting used to the first night or two, but I will NEVER go back to innerspring again, even the pillow top.

Do not buy a pillow topmattress, you can not flip them and the one we purchased only lasted 6 years before it started to sag in the area you sleep and we now have a small mountain in the middle of the mattress, and can not flip it over,am looking now for the best one i can find.

With mattresses, you often get what you pay for. Pillowtops are comfy!
Be sure to give it a test run at the store first.

Pillowtops are very comfortable, but you can't flip them, which is kind of a pain after a while; they also make it harder to get fitted sheets tat actually fit.
