Yes. Straight to the point is much preferred

Yes, very much so. Most men get very ticked off when a lady skirts around an issue or says, "Whatever you want."
One such example would be in a fast food line. A woman should read the menu before getting even near the counter to order - and when she does make up her mind and orders, she should already be reaching for her wallet as the cashier is ringing it up.
I've also witness that women tend to get better promotions and advance better in life when they make it known what they want, how they want it and so on.
Be assertive, but not b*tchy.

Yes, I've been told that in most of the relationships I've been in. Men don't like it when we hint or make them guess. I guess it's a guy thing =) But then again, you know men and women are wired differently, which is a scientific fact. They think logically where we tend to think emotionally =) Tell him what you want and let him go for the gold (whatever that might be) Good luck!

Direct, indirect, whatever works - just so long as we get a clear and complete understanding of what you're feeling, wanting, needing, thinking, etcetera, so we can treat you right.

A relationship where that happens will be 1000% better than one where it doesn't.

On the other hand, directly communicating to your guy about every single issue can get tedious and diminishes the romantic notion that your partner should 'get you', leading to unhappiness. While your partner shouldn't be totally clueless about you, I think that this notion is mostly unrealistic.

If you care about your partner, you will make the effort - you and not them - to make sure they understand what is important to you: and that goes for both girls AND boys.

Wishing or wanting you don't have to do this is pure laziness and if you're doing it you should stop and stop now.

Not always. Most of my guy friends say thats what they want and then they don't like it when they get it. While a strong woman is a good thing to become, a man raised in today's world can't always be that open minded even if they want to. Careful what you wish for.

I would say that men prefer women who are honest, but necessarily "direct about what they want" in a feminist sense.

Yes, men prefer women who know what they want out of life and how to get it. They don't appreciate girls who take it as it comes and have no ambition.

yes if it benefits the man. Other than that a man prefers a woman to be more indirect (even though he understands her) so that he can blame her for not being specific.
