Lets say you are going from Anchorage to Lexington, KY. That's 4009 miles. If you average 19 miles/gallon and gas costs $2.35/gallon.....your gas cost alone is $495.85. Add repairs (and you will need them), food, lodging...well, you get the picture? Might be cheaper to fly.

Gonna be bucks! First of all , a vast majority of your trip is going to be in Canada where gas is quite a bit higher than here in the states. In fact nearly 2000 miles of your trip will be in Northern Canada where gas is at times $5.00 a gallon (Remember it is Canada and things are in metric measurements, so fuel is sold by the liter).

Depending on the vehicle and fuel mileage, you are looking at $70 to $120 every time you fuel up. Add Hotels (about $60- $70 a night); meals ($30- $40 a day), plus incidentals.

Traveling the Alcan is the great adventure. Make sure your vehicle is in top condition. Services are spread about 100 miles apart, and in places even farther.

New wipers before you go; tires in great shape including the spare (get rid of the "inner-tube" spare and get a real tire and wheel); get the anti-freeze flushed, belts inspected and replaced if there is even a remote question about the belt. Carry extra oil, extra anti-freeze already mixed at 50/50; a couple rolls of duct tape, and clear packing tape (works great to tape over a cracked windshield); a couple tubes of Gel Super Glue, a couple of big ugly blue tarps; basic tool kit (include a hatchet and axe).

Willl you need alll this stuff... probably not, but better safe than sorry... you are liabel to be the only one on the highway for quite a spell.

You are traveling through a wilderness area. You are now starring in "Survivor- The Alcan". Bring sleeping bags, a tent, plenty of road snacks like candy bars and nuts, water (if your traveling before May, you'll need to take the water into your hotel room at night).

It is winter in the North. Temperatures will drop to -50 F and colder as you push your way North. It is a great trip!

Been there done that 1377 times and counting.

Get a milepost and a Bell's guide you'll need them.

Ho for the Klondike!
