I've noticed this a lot lately, especially in my parents whenever I talk to friends of mine that are Hispanic. I never even really paid attention to the fact that they weren't the same race as me, but then, my mom suddenly brings it up when one of my friends called. I've heard some of the professors that teach my classes talking about people of different races in steryotypical ways, my parents...even random people in stores!!! Why is it that a lot of people of this age group are so racist???

Well,it is too bad that people who should know better are still that much ignorant, that's a big part of racism, ignorance. If you think about it racism is like me hating a group of people because they have a certain last name it doesn't make sense. It's likely that the people in question have always felt this way,you just hadn't noticed, hope you don't follow their lead.

They grew up in an different time and era. Just think about the things that were occuring during the late 50s and 60s.

FYI: Some teachers aren't experts. Many of them get their knowledge the same way that students do-from a text book. Continue to accept others for their difference and maybe these 40 and 50 year-olds can learn from you.

I am of this age group and it is the way we were brought up. When I was younger everything was segregated, schools, churches, bathrooms. water fountains, buses. We as a generation didn't do it, it was just normal for us. We grew up and saw a lot of things in our lifetime and I am sure we will witness much more 'first'. We saw the first colored TV sets, A/C in every home, man on the moon, computers, think of everything that came about in the past 50 years????? LOTS. We only had friends of our same ethnic background, lived in neighborhoods with only the same race people as ourselves. We have done a lot of adapting in our lives and maybe your parents just don't convert to change easily. We really aren't racist we were brought up to believe each ethnic group stays with his/her race. Not that we are superior just that everyone has their own 'people'. Back when we didn't mix, today the younger generation will set their own generation 'rules' or standards that each of them will accept and live by.

I think because they are older they grew up in a different time period. If you ever watch Barbara Walters and see how she interacts with the black people on her show you can see her prejudice as well.

Examples:
When Monique was on The View she called her children "creatures."
When Brandy was on The View she asked if that was her real hair.
When Tanika Ray was on The View, she started grabbing and pulling her hair to make sure it was real!

I know what you mean, my mom is constantly referring to Asian people as "orientals", which I know irks some and I am constantly correcting her. I'm tired of doing it and I wish she would catch on because I love to watch Anime and Asian cinema.

I am a racist. Why not, life is short and you have to take a stand for what you beleve in.
