It depends how "cheap" you are talking. Disney can be as inexpensive or expensive as you like. I feel that staying onsite is well worth the extra money you spend. Depending on the time of year you are going, going during value season really saves you money, you will pay less for the room. Value resorts can run about $80 per night plus tax. If you do room only you can get a little extra savings on the room.

My suggestion would be to do a package. For a few reasons. First, you have everything in one package and not a hundred different compenents that can get lost and everything. Also, you can take advantage of their fantastic dining plan. The plan will save you 40% or more on you dining and you get to eat at nice places. Finally, Disney has specials that they offer for packages, they really don't offer it for room onlys anymore. But, with the package specials, you can really save a lot of money, Disney even offers dining for free sometimes, right now it is a free ticket upgrade. So that is where more of your savings come in staying onsite and it brings the cost down to what you could find offsite, but you get a clean room, good service, great transfers, etc.

It also depends on your family size, when you travel, etc. But you can get really good prices staying onsite. For two adults on the dining plan for a week at a value resort, I would say you could do it for about $1500 or so.

Stay off property. Try the Best Western Lakeside, which is located in Kissimmee. Rooms there are $59 a night in the off-peak season and it is a really nice resort. Its also minutes from the parks and they offer a shuttle service.
Or get a condo-style hotel like the Lake Suites - also located in Kissimmee. You can have a full kitchen and save a lot of money by preparing your own meals.
Purchase park tickets at legitimate discounted locations:
AAA (membership required)
your local Disney Store
Costco (membership required - travel services)
Sam's Club (membership required- travel services)

When I went with my family we did a Time Share greet and meet even though it was only 4 day and 5 nights it costed around 560 or so, the hotel was about 1 mile outside of Disney, we got a 4 day hopper pass for free and you only have to waste 90 minutes on the meeting for it, we declined of course and went to Disney all 4 days it was well worth it. I highly reccomend it..

For super-cheap transportation, I'd suggest hitch hiking. If you are looking for ultra super cheap transportation (and most likely quicker) you could hang out at truck stops. Most truckers would be happy to give you a ride in return for small 'favors'.

Once you arrive, prepare a sign that says "will work for ticket" or "i have only 3 weeks to live". This might get you in for free.
