Working in the oil field on the rigs is one of the hardest jobs you will ever love. The pay is very good, considering you only work 6 months a year and they feed you all you can stand to eat. You work 12 hours a day, and when you factor in the overtime, it is a decent wage.

Salaries depend on what position you start in. Roustabouts and Roughnecks are the basic entry level positions. Roughnecks work on the rig floor, while Roustabouts are the "janitors" on a rig.

Salaries will vary with experience. The best thing you can do to find out what they are is to call a drilling company and find out what the pay rate is as I have been out of the industry too long (I was paid $12/hour as a Roughneck back in the 80's).

Careers that require a high level of education: doctor, engineer, that sort of thing. The problem is that many engineering jobs are being offshored, so it's hard to know which kind of engineering would be best. Electrical engineering has been hit hard by offshoring lately, as has mechanical engineering. Civil engineering has been hit less hard, but it also tends to pay less. Speak to someone at the engineering school of your chosen university for detailed information on future salaries. Medicine pays well, if you have an MD. Especially if you specialize, like being an oncologist. Of course, you have to pay a fortune for the education and then you have to pay back the student loans. On top of that you have to deal with expensive insurance. Again, try contacting your chosen university and speak with someone in the medical school about which specialties pay best.
