You know what an outline is? Well that's what notes are too. Takes some practice to get it all and keep it short but that is it.

It helps to underline (in pencil if it is a loaner) what you think is important. From the underlined parts you can 'condense' a short version that will jog your memory about the text. That is what the notes should be; your version so you can recall it 'all'.

When your taking notes from a text book, you need to take the most important notes. Example: "Cigarettes contain hundreds of toxins and chemicals. People smoke everyday. Cigarettes are the number one leading cause of lung cancer in the United States". You write down "Cigarettes contain hundreds of toxins and chemicals" and "Cigarettes are the number one leading cause of lung cancer in the United States".

Write the main ideas. For each page write around 3 different bullet-points. Make sure to write down any vocabulary words (if there are any) and define them.
