We've had 2 rabbits for about a year. When they were little bunnies they were tame and as sweet as can be. But as they got older they grunt and seem to be afraid of people. We try to take them out and handle them at least 3 times a week when we clean the cage. Think they'll ever tame down? Or are rabbits just like this?

Are your rabbits neutered/spayed? In addition to spending more time with them, I would *highly* recommend having them neutered/spayed. (At almost a year-old, they're very nearly adults.) Without hormones running their systems, they will calm down and should be more affectionate toward you/other people. Both of our rabbits are sweeter (and healthier) for it! Keep in mind, it's not an overnight transformation... it will take about a month after the surgery for all of the hormones to dissipate.

Here's a quick link about neutering/spaying:

Hmmmm a curious case, but I yes there are ways that you can tame them. You just need a lot of patience and understanding. Have they ever been abused by anyone, or is it possible that they have? Well, here are some ways. Take them inside the house and lay them out on the carpet of a small room. Lie on the floor with them and hold out your hand with a small carrot or other piece of food that they like. Wait for a long time, if possible with no background noise and keep very still and they will come and take food from your hand. If they eat all of the food, slowly reach out and pet them gently. Do this about twice a week as well as holding and playing with them regularly and they will love you and all humans again in no time. There are of course other ways to tame them but in my work, this has been the most effetive.

Good luck!

You should have continued handling them when they were little. Why do you only handle them when you clean the cage? Why not handle them three times a day every day? You don't have to do much, just take them out of the cage, sit them beside you and offer them a special treat like a bit of carrot top or melon rind or alfalfa cube. They are very responsive to kindness.

Rabbits are naturally curious animals. A female usually is a bit crabby while she is in heat and some just in general. When you take time to handle them, make sure you try things for them to trust you. Sit in the floor, Place your feet against the wall and place the rabbit between your legs let it run around and come up to you pet it even if it hunkers down just pet it. If you have a room where you can let it run around without hiding somewhere or going to another room let it down and sit in the floor where it can come up to you on its own. You really should give them attention of somekind everyday. I had a pet mini rex buck for seven years and he was in a large pen outside and when we would bring him in it was like he was always inside. They are a pet alot like a dog only the things they chew on is alot more important and extensive. Good Luck

You need to handle these rabbits everyday when you feed them to get them tame. Just when you clean them out is not enough. Even if it is only picking them up to put them into a run for exercise would be better than what they get now. You need to sit down with them on your lap and stroke them for at least fifteen minutes a day if you want to keep them tame.
