FOODS TO AVOID;

Avoid salt as it can aggravate menstrual cramps as this will increase fluid retention and worsen bloating. Sugar might interfere with the absorption and metabolism of some of the B vitamins and minerals needed by your body.

Avoid foods high in arachidonic acid, this is the fat the body uses to produce the series-2 prostiglandins which are the ones that cause muscle and uterine contractions – these foods include dairy and other animal products.

Soy products can cause problems too; soy products are notorious for affecting women's hormones.

FOODS TO GO FOR;

Chocolate – dark chocolate specifically, chocolate does contain sugars, dairy and caffeine which are bad during menstruation; however dark chocolate is high in magnesium, which menstruating women are often low in. Another plus of course is that chocolate is linked to the release of serotonin in the brain which is part of why it makes us "feel good".

Lots of fruit and vegetables, in particular green leafy vegetables such as spinach that are high in iron so help replace what is lost through bleeding. Banana is great as the vitamin B6 it contains regulates blood glucose levels, which can affect your mood; it's also high in fibre which is something else that is good as fibre-rich foods keep you regular that help with bloating and cramping, also many women have bowel problems during menstruation.

Fish such as salmon and tuna, these contain linolenic acid that helps to relax muscles by producing a antispasmodic prostaglandins, nuts and seeds such as pumpkin and sesame help too, in particular flax seed is very good. Whole grains, legumes, vegetables and fruits all can promote regularity and normal body functioning that help with bloating and cramping.

Make sure you keep up on your water consumption during your period. It keeps you from being bloated from water weight gain/retention, with a little added lemon juice helps too.

VITAMINS;

Magnesium, Calcium and Potassium as these all something your body needs when shedding the lining of your uterus.

A good vitamin B complex, in particular with high, B3, B6 and B13 will help with PMS, and in the B3 the vasodilating effect can lessen the spasm of the uterus.

Cell salts are also important and work as a very good painkiller without making the problem itself worse and work a lot faster than any painkiller too - http://www.elixirs.com/cellsalts.cfm

Omega 3 oil (linoleic acid) and Omega 3 oil (linolenic acid), increasing these in your diet can improve the balance between these two types of oils that help your body function.

HERBS;

Peppermint, Cinnamon, Raspberry leaf, Camomile, Wild Rose, Lemon balm, Black Haw, Vitex, Blessed thistle, Wild marjoram, Red raspberry, Wild strawberry, Valerian, Yarrow, Blue cohosh, Dong quai.
Depending on what problems you experience on your period.
