I am not sure what the highest form of patriotism really is, but I am totally sure that dissent is patriotic....

What better way to say that you love your country than to have the guts to stand up and try to make it better...to stand up and remind everyone of the ideals that the place was meant to stand for and how we are not living up to them......

It is much like a friendship or parenting situation (and yes...we are all parents of our government).....Yes, you unconditionally love them. But.....when they are mistaken, it is your absolute obligation to stand up and let them know......

When the government or anyone tells you that you are being unpatriotic by dissenting, they are the unpatriotic ones....Dissent is necessary....and what our FREEDOM is all about.

It depends on how well reasoned the dissent is. The best way to describe people who would undermine this idea is that they are intellectual dwarfs. We don't want a rubberstamp society. That's how despots and corporations gain control of entire countries. Unfortunately, that seems to be what's happening in our own country today.

Dissent is not by definition patriotism. For example, we have a democratic / republic system of government. What if I want a dictatorship to govern us? I dissent with the common belief and hold my own, but my belief is not patriotic, it is against the American way.
