When an insecure person sees another person with a radically different outlook and philosophy, he or she not only evaluates the other person but also re-evaluates him or herself. The idea is that if someone else is so different, then maybe there is something wrong with the way one's own world view is constructed. This really scares some people, so a defensive response kicks in--the mind turns off and an automatic rejection or wall of dogma or wall of propriety comes up. It is xenophobia, the fear of the Other. The person can't accept differences, because it makes him look critically at himself and question his place in the universe. If there is insecurity and uncertainty within the person, it creates a disconnected feeling, an aloneness. This frightens the person into clinging to a group philosophy or religion or social code, etc. etc.

P.S. I suppose my answer was more to why people reject others' religions and personalities. Questioning is not so extreme, but indicates a desire to learn. Forgive any misinterpretation!
