No, it will not modify your existing hard drive. It is specfically designed to do what you want it to do.
It does not add memory though, it adds storage space.

No. If you plug in an external hard drive it acts just like a USB key.

No. It'll be an e-drive or f-drive or whatever the next letter is. It's the same as if you plug in a usb flash drive.

Your friend sounds like a moron.

Unless you booted to the external drive somehow and formatted your internal drive, which sounds like something your friend might do.
