Last year worms ruined my potatoes and carrot. How can I control them (or get rid of them in the veg. plot?

I know worms are beneficial but that's in the right place, not burrowing through the spuds.

diatomaceous earth (not pool grade)
its powdery like powdered sugar but it cuts worms up like glass and is safe for humans children and pets to be around

Earth worms do not eat potoatoes and carrots. You need to identify the pest in order to eradicate it. Diatomatious earth is great for slugs too. Here is a link:
